Task One: About you . . .
On a piece of paper answer the following questions:
- What are interested in? (either in school or outside of school)
- What word(s) would you use to describe yourself?
- What are your strengths as a learner?
- What are your challenges as a learner?
Task Two:The Classroom Community
- How are you feeling about being in school this year? (Do you have something you are worried about? Do you have something you are excited about? What questions or concerns do you have?)
- What do you like about school?
- What frustrates you about school?
- What is the ideal learning environment for you?
- Would you prefer to sit on your own or with someone?
- Name two people you would feel comfortable sitting beside.
Task Three: Raven Tale by Richard Wagamese
- I will read the story to the class (you will have a copy to follow along).
- Writing Prompt: The Raven is told, "As the eagle is blessed, so too are the ravens. That's the truth of the world. The trick is to seek your own gifts, make use of them and learn to soar in that way."
- Your Task: Write a response to the story. Things to think about:
- What meaning do you take from this story of the Raven?
- What are your own gifts/talents/strengths/interests?
- What gives you a sense of purpose?
- How do you make use of your gifts/talents/strengths/interests?)
"That is the trick of it in this life. There are a million shiny things around us, and it's easy to get distracted. Drink it all in, but make it your own. Find your own chunk of the sky, then flap, flap, soar. Flap, flap, soar." (Wagamese, 2008)
Task Three: Grit: The power of passion
